The Silence of the Fish (2003)

The title of the work refers to an article by Sara Chinski, the artist's teacher, discussing the relations of society / ethnicity and status in Israeli art.

The painting, which is a conversion of a black and white photograph (turned sepia) to fluorescent blue and yellow, depicts a scene on a boat. One highlights a woman, his grandmother, and the other highlights a man, his grandfather. The boat appears to be an immigrants boat led by an authoritative captain in winter far out at sea. But in fact it is taken from a vacation moment, sailing on a boat that allows a view into the depths of the Red Sea, given that its bottom is transparent. The work deals with alternating truths in relation to historical and political narratives. It raises an Unknown (immigration, silencing) using an absentee (the boat is not an immigrants boat but rather a leisure boat) and using the built-in context of its creator's (the painter) identity.
